Orgón es un personaje bastante importante que ha caÃdo bajo la influencia de Tartufo (Tartuffe es el nombre dado a la trufa u hongo escondido bajo tierra), un hipócrita beaturrón, que además es bastante torpe. De hecho, los únicos que no se han dado cuenta de la verdadera naturaleza de Tartufo son Orgón y Madame Pernelle. El mediocre y ladino Tartufo exagera la devoción y ha llegado a ser el director espiritual de Orgón. Este aventurero está tratando, además, de casarse con la hija de su benefactor, al tiempo que trata de seducir a la segunda esposa de éste, Elmira, mucho más joven que su marido. Una vez desenmascarado, tratará de aprovecharse de unas donaciones (firmadas) que Orgón le ha transmitido para tratar de echar a éste de su propia casa. Va incluso ante el rey, pero éste, recordando los antiguos servicios que Orgón le prestó, anula dichos papeles y hace que Tartufo sea detenido.
